Learning & Events
Education lies at the heart of the NUA’s mission - from learning new upholstery skills and techniques, to learning better business practices. The NUA offers multiple learning opportunities.
Our on-line events offer convenient viewing from anywhere. The monthly webinar series brings industry experts that speak on a variety of topics related to upholstery. The NUA also has a book club which hosts on-line conversations with fellow readers and sometimes with the author themselves! Community meetings offer monthly opportunities to talk face-to-face (online) with fellow professionals, in order to share and learn together. Finally, the quarterly newsletter keeps our members up to speed with everything going on with the NUA.
The NUA hosted a symposium in the fall of 2019 in conjunction with the Custom Workroom Conference in North Carolina. It was a great experience to learn and network with fellow professionals in person. We look forward to supporting more in person events in the future.
The NUA’s webinars provide continuing education opportunities—free to members—on a variety of upholstery and business topics. Held the 2nd Tuesday of each month, these hour-long on-line classes bring learning opportunities to your business. Popular past webinars include demonstrations from Rhonda Shanahan on upholstery tools and a presentation from Lewis Mabon on upholstered furniture design.

Each month, NUA members hold a book discussion (via a Facebook group) to delve into a selected title that explores the upholstery trade, business skills, personal development, and more.
Some books we’ve reviewed in the past include James Clear’s “AtomicHabits” and Frank Destro, Jr.’s “Professional Upholstery: All the Trade Secrets”.
The NUA hosts a monthly Upholstery Community Meeting via Zoom, the 4th Tuesday of the month at 1 pm EST. This is a live discussion with fellow upholstery colleagues that provides an opportunity to learn and share from each other. Each month has a different theme for discussion.
To attend, register for a Community Meeting through the Events Calendar. You will then receive a confirmation email containing the Zoom meeting details.
